Eating Healthy while Travelling

It is easy to say that when you’re travelling your eating decisions are much different to what they would be while at home. Meals tends to turn into “treat yourself” food and can be quite costly often resulting in a little extra around the stomach and a little less in the wallet. Because you are on holidays it’s understandable that you will be spending more on food considering that you will be eating out most of the time, but this doesn’t have to be the case.

Shopping for Food in a foreign country:

Choosing healthier options isn’t as difficult as it seems, by finding a local grocery store for just the basics will save you a lot of money. If you just think … the more you save rather than eating at a café every morning for breakfast and putting more into experiences, your holiday will be more fulfilled. By just buying fruits, nuts, grained bread, eggs, cold meats and other healthy snacks you can save a lot of your food budget. Instead of every meal being purchased from a restaurant your breakfast, snacks and lunches can be healthy, satisfying food, saving you $$ and then you can enjoy restaurant food for dinner.

Eating Tips:

–          Have a look on Group-on, TravelZoo or other coupon websites to find restaurant deals in the country, most countries have websites like this to bring in tourists to their restaurant. You can find great restaurants on these sites with great deals saving you 60-70% or getting you some freebies.

–          When buying from the grocery store create a list of products that you will need for 1-2 days, don’t over purchase because you won’t likely be able to bring the food with you.

–          Find out if your hotel offers free/discounted breakfast, this is a massive money saver. Hotels just about always offer a healthy meal option.

–          Make sure your hotel room has a refrigerator to stock the food you purchased for the day.

–          If you’re staying for an extended time try and find an hotel with a small kitchenette to make your own food, it will save you money by cooking your own food rather than eating out for weeks on end.

–          A massive money saver is purchasing a reusable water bottle, whether the bottle is glass or another reusable material by just filling up a water bottle for the day will save you a lot. When I go to the airport water is just as expensive as coffee, costing $3.75 or sometimes $4 for a stock standard mount franklin bottle.  Multiple that by the number of days of travel and you realise how unnecessary it is when you could just fill up your own bottle each day.

–         Invest in a great container with multiple sections, with a lid that you can freeze, it will keep your lunches cool on your day trips and allow you to pack multiple food items to snack on.

By just following a few of these tips you can save yourself a great deal of money, putting back into experiences and holiday adventures. If you have any more tips and tricks don’t forget to comment below 🙂
